• August is Comics for Kids Month! CTON is coming!

Join us on Wednesday August 11th for a signing and workshop with Clayton Hanmer, creator of Owl Kids CTON, and illustrator of “Not Your Typical Book About the Environment” and Owl Magazine! Clayton will be here for an open signing from 12-1 and then hold a how to draw workshop for kids from 1-3! This workshop is FREE, but space will be limited to 10 children. Refreshments will be provided and each participant will receive a special gift at the end of the day! Be sure to stop by the store or give us a call (519-763-5544) to sign up soon or you might miss out!

This time jumping series by Grant Morrison has been a huge hit with both regular and casual Batman readers. This issue finds Bruce in the wild west and is drawn by Canadian artist, and 2010 Eisner Award Winner, Cameron Stewart. What strange encounters will Bruce find in this issue? Cool Items to Order: Serenity Shepherd's Tale hc

The much rumored, much anticipated, and much wished for origin of Shepherd Book is at last solicited in the July Previews. This hard cover book written by Joss and Zack Whedon with art by Chris Samnee will finally fill in the gaps in Book's back story, filling all Firefly lovers in on where he came from and why he was always so secretive. This book is sure to fly off the shelves so be sure to get your pre-order in on time. You can check it out on page 28 of the July Previews and it will cost approximately 17.00.

Recommended Reading: Smile

The cover to Smile by Raina Telgemeier with it's dentist office green background and giant brace filled happy face might put older readers off. The fact that the book was published by Scholastic might also, but this little book deserves a try. It is the harrowing tale of Telgemeier's adventures in orthodontics drawn in a delightful cartoon style. In grade six Raina was told she had to get braces to fix a slight over bite, before she had them attached she fell and knocked out her two front teeth. After having them put back in with emergency dental surgery they didn't take root and for the next few years she got to experience braces, false teeth and retainers all while finishing junior high and growing up in high school. This book was a fantastic read, it is lighthearted and at times brilliant. As a reader who had to go through the trials of dental surgery and braces it was easy to relate to Raina's story. For those lucky ones who never had a mouth full of metal you will find her tale of teenage self discovery just as relate-able as she final finds who she wants to be and who she should be friends with to get there. I highly recommend this book for all ages.
