Cool Items to Order: Janes in Love

Cecil Castelluccci and Jim Rugg team up again for another Plain Janes adventure. The Janes are playing cupid and competing in a high profile art contest, but how will that affect the group? If you haven't picked up the first quirky and fantastic Minx graphic novel The Plain Janes then you definitely should. You will then understand why you should check out page 113 of the June Previews.

Anime Review: Beck

Yes, I know what you are thinking. Why would I be reviewing Beck now when it has already shown on Much Music? For one very good reason, what you saw on television was the dubbed version, with a special series like Beck you should really see both.
Beck is the story of a young musician named Koyuki who crosses paths one day with a very strange looking dog named Beck and his owner, Ryusuke. Over time a bond forms and Ryusuke helps Koyuki enter the world of rock music, they form a band and name it after that weird dog. As Beck tries to make it into the music mainstream in Japan they get picked up for a US indie record deal and things start to spiral out of control.
This may seem like a simple plot line, especially in the world of series like Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach, but the pacing of Beck makes it unbelievably engrossing to watch. The reason that both the subbed and dubbed versions should be watched is the music. A good portion of the music was re-recorded by the English voice actors, and though they all have perfectly fine voices, they lack a quality that only the Japanese actors have, the heart. All of the tracks on the Original Soundtrack for the series are listed as being performed by the character, not the actor. Other bands in the dub have had their music replaced totally with many indie bands from across North America, which was a great way to get said bands more attention. The both can be said for the original Japanese music, if you liked what you heard from Beck in English you may be surprised by the Japanese.
There are six volumes to Beck, with five episodes on the first two discs and four on the rest. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes good rock music or is looking for something different than the anime norm of magic powers and mecha. Beck has a PG rating due to Corse Language.
